Oluseyi Abiodun Makinde, widely known as Seyi Makinde, has solidified his reputation as one of Nigeria’s most progressive and visionary leaders. Born on December 25, 1967, in Ibadan, Oyo State, he has successfully transitioned from a thriving career in engineering and business to becoming the executive governor of Oyo State. His tenure in office has been marked by strategic policies focused on economic development, education, healthcare, security, and infrastructure.

Early Life and Educational Background

Seyi Makinde was born into a family that valued education and integrity. His father, Pa Olatubosun Makinde, was a teacher who later became an accountant, while his mother, Madam Abigail Makinde, played a significant role in his upbringing. Makinde attended St. Paul Primary School and later completed his primary education at St. Michael Primary School in Yemetu, Ibadan. He then proceeded to Bishop Phillips Academy, Monatan, Ibadan, for his secondary education.

In 1985, he was admitted to the University of Lagos, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering in 1990. Recognizing the importance of continuous learning, he pursued further studies at prestigious institutions such as Industrial Control Services in Houston, Texas, the Lagos Business School, the Jiskoot Auto Control Training Centre in Kent, England, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he deepened his knowledge of engineering, business management, and problem-solving.

Makinde’s professional career began at Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) of Nigeria, where he worked as a pupil engineer from 1990 to 1992. He later joined Rebold International Limited as a Field Engineer and quickly rose to the position of Assistant Manager (Eket operations) from 1992 to 1997. His technical expertise in fluid and gas metering soon positioned him as an industry expert.

At the age of 29, he took a bold step and founded Makon Engineering and Technical Services Limited (METS) in 1997. As the Group Managing Director, he transformed METS into a formidable indigenous oil and gas firm, contributing significantly to Nigeria’s energy sector. His impressive portfolio and leadership earned him membership in prestigious professional bodies such as the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).

Makinde’s desire to effect change led him into politics in 2007 when he contested for the Oyo South Senatorial seat under the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP), although he did not win. In 2015, he sought the gubernatorial ticket under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) but was unsuccessful. Undeterred, he moved to the Social Democratic Party (SDP) and contested the 2015 Oyo State gubernatorial election, finishing third.

In September 2017, he rejoined the PDP and positioned himself as a leading contender for the governorship position. His perseverance paid off in 2019 when he won the Oyo State gubernatorial election with 515,621 votes, defeating his closest rival from the All Progressives Congress (APC). In December 2023, the Court of Appeal in Abuja ordered him and six others to pay N50 million in damages for failing to settle an outstanding balance of N3.4 billion from a Supreme Court judgment issued in May 2021. This legal matter stemmed from the unlawful dismissal of local government chairmen and councillors in 2019.
