As you can see above, taking part in office politics is both advantageous and disadvantageous. The question of whether it is ethical to participate in it is contextual. While some may argue that it is ethical as long as it is advantageous, some may argue that it is not because of the demerits. Well, both schools of thought are contextually right.

My belief is that as long as it is detrimental to the organization, then it is unethical. This is because your employment is first about making the organization achieve its goals. Whatever you do outside this reason is unethical. The moment your office politics is against the achievement of the organization, you are not only against the organization, but you also have unethical work practices.
