He embraced the principles of Awoism, which emphasize progressive governance, federalism, and social welfare policies. In 1951, he became a founding member of the Action Group, a political party dedicated to promoting Yoruba interests and advocating for Nigeria’s independence.

During the 1960s and beyond, Adebanjo stood firm in his commitment to democratic values despite the turbulent political climate. He was actively involved in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), which opposed military rule and the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election. In 2021, Ayo Adebanjo was appointed acting leader of Afenifere following the leadership of Pa Reuben Fasoranti. One notable instance was the claim by former Osun State Governor, Chief Bisi Akande, that Bola Tinubu financed the construction of his Lekki residence. Adebanjo refuted these claims, asserting that he funded the house through personal resources, including selling properties and obtaining a bank loan.

He challenged his accusers to disclose the sources of their wealth, reinforcing his reputation as a leader who upheld transparency and accountability.

Death and Legacy

On February 14, 2025, Ayo Adebanjo passed away peacefully at his residence in Lekki, Lagos State, at the age of 96. His family, in an official statement, expressed their deep sorrow, noting that he remained committed to the fight for justice, democracy, and equity until his last breath.
